July 3, 2011 at IHOP

NELM 6.5 to 6.8 (overhead)
Seeing was average.

This is the first time I’ve observed with my 22” at a dark site since November 2, 2010, almost 8 months ago!.  Since I’ve missed most of the spring flat galaxies, I’ve decided to hit as some of them, but unfortunately they were located in the skyglow of Sacramento.  The only object in a “dark” part of the sky in this report is Ethos 1.  These are very raw notes and I didn’t take very good notes, just the basics.

 22” f/4.0 on equatorial platform

Eyepieces: 24mm Panoptic (96x), 12.5mm BGO (184x), 9mm BGO (255x) and 6mm ZAO-II (383x)

UGC 5421  10 04 41.8  +55 18 48   18.0,  1.7x0.3’

22” (184, 255, 383x) - The field is easily located, but no galaxy.

UGC 5459  10 08 10.6  +53 04 57  13.2b  4.7x0.7’

22” (184 and 255x) – Faint thin glow.  Even surface brightness, no central brightening.  PA = 135 and 1.5‘ long.  A mag 7.9 star is just off the SE tip.  Three other “bright” stars, mag 7.9 to 8.8 to the east, NE and NNW.

UGC 7125  12 08 42.4  +36 48 10  14.2p  4.7x0.7’

22”  (184 and 255x) - Considerably faint thick glow with very little central brightening and diffuse edges.  PA = 80 and 1’ long.  A 13.0 mag star is NE from the eastern tip.

UGC 7774  12 36 22.6  +40 00 19  14.8p  3.8x0.5’

22” (184 and 255x) – Considerably faint thick glow, even surface brightness, no central brightening.  Diffuse edges.  PA = 100 and 1.5’ long

UGC 7993 12 50 31.2  +52 07 23  15.1p  2.3x0.4’

22” (184 and 255x) – Considerably faint, thin even surface brightness glow with diffuse edges.  No central brightening.  PA = 135 and 1.3’ long.  A mag 13.0 star is just north of the NW tip.

NGC 5023  13 12 12.0  +44 02 19  12.9b  6.7x0.7’

22” (184 and 255x) - Bright, thin glow with defined edges.  Appears almost mottled.  PA = 30 and 3.5’ long.

NGC 5229  13 34 03.2  +47 54 47  14.3p  3.8x0.5’

22” (184 and 255x) – Faint, thin glow.  Even surface brightness, no central brightening.  Defined edges.  PA = 165 and 1.5’ long

UGC 9169  14 19 44.9  +09 21 47  13.5p  4.2x0.9’

22” (184 and 255x) – Considerably faint, thin glow with defined edges.  Suspect brighter streak in the middle.  PA = 45 and 1.5’ long.

UGC 9249  14 27 00.1  +08 41 04  14.7p 2.1x0.2’

22” (184, 255 and 383x) – Very faint, small thin glow.  PA = 90 and 1.3’ long.  A mag 9.8 star lies 2.7’ north.

Ethos 1  19 16 31.5   +36 09 48  ~17.6  60x20”

22" (383x) - Very faint, 2:1 elongated glow. Even surface brightness, PA = 135 and about 0.5' long. The Lumicon UHC filter makes it disappear, but the Astronomik CLS filter helps a little.  I suspect that the “elongated” tips (jets) are the two double stars along the same axis as the jets.
This one of the new planetaries discussed on AmAstro.   Here is an article on ESO.
