Quick
note
about the KTG
Catalogue.
It is Part I of isolated triplets of galaxies
researched by a group of Russian astronomers in a
paper published in Astrofizicheskie Issledovaniia,
vol. 11 in 1979. This list contains 84 isolated
triples of northern-hemisphere galaxies with
apparent magnitudes of the components m < 15.7
mag. There
is a similar list for the southern hemisphere, KTS Abstract of
the original paper A
list of 84 northern isolated galaxy triplets with
component apparent magnitudes no fainter than 15.7
is compiled on the basis of a complete examination
of Palomar Sky Survey prints. Equatorial
coordinates, photographic apparent magnitudes,
angular diameters, angular separations,
morphological types, radial velocities, and other
characteristics of the triplet members are provided,
along with finding charts. Three main types of
triplet configuration are distinguished: double,
line, and triangle. It is shown that triple systems
constitute 0.8% of northern galaxies brighter than
15.7 mag, that 64% of the triplets are 'completely
isolated', and that 24% of the triplet members are
elliptical and lenticular galaxies, while 76% are
spirals and irregulars. Note: These are fairly raw notes out of my notebook. All object parameters in parenthesis are
listed in RA, Dec, size and listed magnitude without
commas. |

55 1.1x0.3’ 15.3) – Very faint 2:1 elongated even
surface brightness glow with diffuse edges. 0.6’ long and
PA = 30 degrees. A
group resembling a house lies just east. CGCG 427-36 (21 53 19.6 +15 33 05 0.5x0.4’ 15.6) – Considerably faint round glow with a stellar core. Defined edges. 0.2’ across. Lies 3.9’ SSE from CGCG 427-35.
CGCG 427-37 (21 53 23.5 +15 31
44 0.5x0.5’ 15.4)
–.Considerably faint round even
surface brightness glow with a stellar core. 0.2’ across. Very slightly
brighter than CGCG 427-36.
A mag 12.1 star lies just 0.7’ slightly south of
west. 1.7’
SE of -36
Nearby galaxy, CGCG 427-24 (1.3x1.1’ 15.1), lies on the other side of the “house”
or about 6’ WSW of -37.
Very faint small round glow with diffuse edges. Even surface
brightness. 0.3’
across. |

UGC 11851 trio in
Pegasus (KTG 74) 22”
f/4 (230, 255, 328 and 383x) – Tight double galaxies of
different proportions but roughly equal brightness with
a much dimmer lone third member at the opposite end, but
20 times farther.
UGC 11851 (21 55 59.2 +05 54
08 1.0x0.7’ 14.7) – Considerably faint round glow with
a stellar core. Defined
edges. 0.4’
across. A
blazing mag 10.7 star lies 1.4’ south.
MAC 2156+0554 (21 56 00.8 +05 54
34 0.5x0.1’ 15.5) – Faint slightly elongated small glow
with defined edges.
Bright nearly stellar core. 0.1’ long and
PA = 120 degrees. Lies
just 0.5 NE from UGC 11851.

NGC 7236 trio in Pegasus
(Arp 169) 22”
f/4 (230 and 383x) – A collinear trio of two similar NGC
galaxies and an uncharted on the SE tip. Quite a few
field stars with a mag 10.4 star about 2.7’ SW from the
trio.
|
||
UGC 12110 trio in
Pegasus 22”
f/4 (230, 255, 328 and 383x) – Nice 45 degree right
triangle of faint galaxies occupying about 3’ of space. A mag 9.7 star
lies 6.8’ due north.
|
||
CGCG 430-1 trio in
Pegasus (KTG 75) 22”
f/4 (230 and 383x) – Nearly collinear trio of galaxies
with two brighter ellipticals and a dim smudge in the
center. About 5’ long and aligned north-south.
|
||
UGC 12191 trio in
Pegasus (KTG 76) 22”
f/4 (230 and 383x) – A bent string of three galaxies
about 4’ long with a large very diffuse galaxy in the
middle.
|
||
UGC 12297 trio in Pegasus 22”
f/4 (230 and 383x) – Two bright high surface brightness
galaxies with one uncharted galaxy occupying a space of
2.8’.
|
||
NGC 142 trio in Cetus 22”
f/4 (230 and 255x) –
This trio was observed while it was fairly low
over the SE horizon and the skies there wasn’t that
great, probably about mag 5.
|
||
NGC 177 trio in Cetus 22”
f/4 (230 and 255x) – This trio was also observed while
it was fairly low over the SE horizon, about 20 degrees.
|
||
MAC 0033-0251 trio in Cetus 22”
f/4 (230, 328 and 383x) – Very compact trio of faint
galaxies in a space of less than 1’ across. A mag 8.9 star
lies 8.2’ ENE.
|
||
NGC 235 trio in Cetus 22”
f/4 (230, 328 and 383x) – A nice group of galaxies
consisting of a double galaxy and a single. Occupies a
space of 2.5’ across.
A couple thin galaxies, NGC 230 and IC 1573 lies
to the SW, I didn’t look for the latter.
|
||
UGC 2211 trio in Cetus 22”
f/4 (230 and 383x) – Small collinear string of three
faint galaxies of about 2.2’ end to end. Aligned
